Nursing’s Professional Identity
Caring for others has existed in all parts of the world since the beginning. It is integral to our humanity. As knowledge grew, so did the identity of nursing. However, unlike medicine, nurses have often downplayed their extensive and rich history (Bennett et al., 2020). It was not until 2021 that the study of nursing history became an expectation in nursing curriculum (American Association of Colleges of Nursing [AACN], 2021). Now, there is recognition that a true understanding of the significant milestones, influential figures, and pivotal events that have shaped the profession builds a sense of community, purpose, and pride.

Points to Ponder
The pictures above showcase professional nurses in two very different eras. What elements of professionalism have remained at the core of nursing’s identity over the years? What elements of professionalism have changed as history has progressed into the modern age?
The Image of Nursing
In this exhibit, you will see how the image of nursing has evolved throughout history. From the use of a printing press in the 1600s to the internet, the generalized impression of nurses and the nursing profession has driven the perception of the public and those thinking of entering the field (van der Cingel & Brouwer, 2021). These mediums have created conflicting images of nursing over different periods, resulting in mixed and inconsistent messaging. The image of nursing has ranged from an angel of mercy to a seductress, included almost all female representations, and shown limited diversity. This perceived image of nursing affects how nurses are treated by clients, other healthcare professionals, and the public. It also impacts how nurses see themselves and their profession.

Slide 1: Late 1800s
During this period, those in a nursing role were portrayed as maternal and angelic.
Slide 2: Early 1900s
During this period in history, nursing was primarily task-oriented and centered on following physician orders.
Slide 3: 1930s
The nursing role has sometimes been viewed as overly sexualized and predominantly female, which has historically skewed society’s view and understanding of the nursing profession.
Slide 4: 1940s
Throughout history, wartime has reshaped the public’s perspective of nursing.
Slide 5: 2020s
While similarities exist between the nurses of yesteryear and modern-day nurses, today’s professional nurse has an expanded scope of practice and represents an increasingly diverse population.
How History Has Shaped the Nursing Profession
Moving through this wing of the museum, this gallery highlights how the people and events of nursing history have influenced many different aspects of the profession today. From critical thinking to expanding diversity in practice to ever-progressing technology and research, nursing history has played a part in advancing the profession to where it is today.

Aspects of Nursing Throughout History Transcript
Spot 1: Critical Thinking
The history of nursing is quite complex and is impacted by time, place, gender roles, and other factors. Due to a lack of scientific knowledge, nurses have been involved in treatments or practices, like lobotomies for the mentally ill, that are considered inhumane today (Bradshaw & Willis, 2023). However, looking at past controversial practices offers opportunities for critical analysis. The passage of time allows us to discuss these historical cases calmly and critically. It is essential to learn from the past to make better future decisions, and this is why the nursing profession promotes critical thinking, debate, and advocacy.
Spot 2: The Client
Historically, the focus in health care was not on the client. The power was with the healthcare provider, who was deemed the expert, and the client was expected to follow the instructions with little input given for decision-making. The focus was on the curative action, the procedure, or the drug, and clients were typically not included in medical notes. In contrast, nursing has always focused on the client, giving them a voice. It was not until 2010 that the concept of client-centered care was formally introduced by the Institute of Medicine (Stewart et al., 2024).
Spot 3: Diversity of Practice
The rich history of nursing also propelled the profession into diverse practice settings and roles. From battlefields to bedside to research, nurses continue their endeavors. History spotlights nurses’ national and international humanitarian efforts in various roles. It emphasizes the reach of the profession.
Spot 4: Importance of Education, Licensure and Regulation
Historically, nursing struggled to become an independent profession, yet education was always required. Early nursing education was mainly observational, and teachers were physicians or other nurses (van der Cingel & Brouwer, 2021). This unregulated, informal education blossomed into a regulated, rigorous educational system we know today. The progression of education led to various degrees, licensures, and roles.
Spot 5: Technology as a Driving Force
Advances in practice and technology redefined health care and the nursing profession. Early healthcare providers treated clients’ symptoms with limited knowledge of the human body, medications, herbs, and illnesses. Research and time have resulted in advancements that could never have been imagined, from antibiotics to genetic engineering. They influenced and will continue to influence nursing responsibilities, education, roles, and client outcomes.
Spot 6: Impact of War
The evolution of nursing is closely tied to wartime activities. Most advances in abilities and opportunities result from wars and the need to care for soldiers, civilians, and enemies. Each war led to opportunities to create interventions to enhance survival and quality of life. Nurses in wartime demonstrated the bravery, honor, and devotion that are core values of the profession.
Spot 7: Nursing Workforce Issues
The need for nurses has been a long-time trend and is directly related to historical events (van der Cingel & Brouwer, 2021). Rarely has there been an overabundance of nurses in history. However, workforce issues extend beyond the number of nurses to the number of diverse nurses. Nursing, a female-dominated profession, included men, ethnic minorities, and racial minorities even before the 19th century due to need.
Spot 8: Nursing Research
Early nursing practice was based on tradition instead of formal studies. However, traditional practices were deeply rooted in what worked and did not work previously (van der Cingel & Brouwer, 2021). Knowledge bases were not challenged until education became more widespread. Today, refinement and advancement of nursing knowledge is the responsibility of every nurse.
My Practice Connection
As an RNBSN student, you may question how nursing history can influence or impact your nursing practice. Throughout history, nurses have demonstrated perseverance, empathy, and resilience during times of great challenge. You have likely faced challenges in your own nursing practice that have sparked personal and professional growth. If you could add to this museum exhibit, what do you believe is most important to share to educate society and future nurses?
