Purpose

The purpose of this Discussion is to foster an appreciation for past, present, and future diversity within nursing and consider personal and professional strategies for continued progress toward a more diverse and equitable nursing culture.

Course Outcomes

This Discussion enables the student to meet the following course outcomes:

  • CO 1: Describe persons and events in nursing history from the early years through the 19th century related to leadership and provision of care. (PO 2)
  • CO 2: Apply lessons from nursing history to today’s professional nursing practice. (PO 4)
  • CO 3: Identify persons and events in nursing history impacting evidence-based practice from the 20th century and 21st century. (PO 8)
  • CO 4: Analyze the impact of nursing history on professional nursing roles today and in the future. (PO 7)

Due Date

Graded Discussions in Weeks 1-7 are due Sunday at 11:59 p.m. MT. For courses with Week 8 graded Discussions, the Discussion will close on Saturday at 11:59 p.m. MT. All Week 8 Discussion requirements must be met by this deadline.

 Discussion: Apply Knowledge

Step 1: Select a nurse (past or present) representing a race, ethnicity, or gender different from your own and whose story and work you find inspiring. You may select notable historical figures from the Week 7 Canvas explore modules or choose a nurse outside the course content.

Step 2: After reflecting on your selected nurse’s story and professional contributions, answer the discussion prompts below.

Paragraph one: Consider the nurse you selected for this discussion. What do you find inspiring about the chosen nurse’s story and/or professional contributions?

Paragraph two: Powerful stories can motivate us to action, and often, small acts can create a big impact. What is one change you can make in your nursing practice to help create a more diverse and inclusive nursing culture?

Paragraph three: Think about the nursing profession 50 years from now. Regarding diversity and equal representation, what do you hope the profession looks like in the future, and what steps must be taken to get there?

References: Provide complete references for all citations.
