Overview

For this Performance Task Assessment, you explain the importance of using standardized nursing languages to document nursing care and enhance patient safety. You also define nursing informatics and the DIKW model in the context of nursing informatics and explain how nurses can use nursing informatics in their practice. Finally, you apply the DIKW model to an issue in nursing practice.

Achievement vs. Mastery of the Competency

Mastery of this Competency means that 80% or more of the rows have been assessed as Exceeds Expectations and no rows have been assessed as Does Not Meet Expectations.
Achievement of this Competency means that all rows are assessed at Meets Expectations or above (but lower than the 80% threshold required for Mastery).

Assessment of Individual Rubric Rows

In order to achieve Meets Expectations for a particular row of the rubric, you must have adequately completed all criteria in that row. This means that you have addressed all required elements to the required level of quantity and/or quality.

In order to achieve Exceeds Expectations for a particular row of the rubric, you must have adequately completed all criteria in the row, and in addition, your response must reflect a depth and breadth of knowledge and expertise. Examples of this include—but are not limited to—the following:

You provide additional, specific, and/or particularly relevant examples to illustrate points made.
You seamlessly incorporate your original thoughts and diverse, credible, and relevant academic sources, when applicable, to express your viewpoint or develop a persuasive argument.

Explain the importance of using standardized nursing languages to document nursing care and enhance patient safety. How are standardized languages different from abbreviations used in healthcare? How does SNL enhance patient safety? Be specific and provide examples from your practice.

Module 1, Part 2: Informational Pamphlet (submit as a separate document)

Review the Learning Activities in Module 1 and focus on the field of Nursing Informatics for this part of the Performance Task.

Create a 1-page informational pamphlet that uses text as well as images to explain the field of nursing informatics to nurses who are thinking about a career in nursing informatics. Include the following elements:

A definition of nursing informatics
At least three components of nursing informatics
A definition of the DIKW pyramid within the context of nursing informatics.
An explanation of how nurses might use nursing informatics in their practice (provide at least three examples).

Use your own words and aim to be creative. Cite any sources used in APA format on a separate reference page.

Submit your informational pamphlet as a separate document.
